How to compare refund loan or advance offers
- Identify the actual lender (usually a bank) and read its terms, not just the preparer’s advertisement.
- Add up every fee: preparation, refund transfer, loan or account fees. Compare that total with the cost of waiting.
- Check the maximum advance amount and what share of your expected refund it represents.
- Ask what happens if your refund is reduced, delayed or offset for a debt you owe.
- Never share your SSN or bank details with a website that does not clearly identify the company behind it.
